In my opinion too many people only focus on their protein shakes and not whole foods. Nobody really asks if it is necessary for you, the question mostly is, what kind of a protein supplement you take? Buying supplements is not that cheap and in theses hard times people can´t afford them. Does a protein shake really make such a difference that you have to spend that much money on it every single month?
Some expert suggest that if your protein requirements are over 200 grams you should use protein powder shakes. I agree with it mostly and it does make life a lot easier but lets take a look at some foods where you should get most of your protein. Most of your dietary protein should come from meat, fish, eggs and poultry. It is always better to get as much proteins from whole foods, they offer a wide spectrum of nutrients that powders can´t.
But protein is the building block of the whole body and supplements are a great way to extra proteins quickly. Here are some of the benefits of proteins:
builds and maintaines healthy muscles boosts immune system supports red blood cells production keeps your hair, fingernails, and skin healthy
But not all shakes have the same quality. Some have ingredients like fructose, saccharin, aspartame and artificial colors. Always use products that are natural. An effective method to determine a quality product, is to buy protein supplements that have been on the market for some 2 years. Then you know people are using it. New ones have not been tested by the consumers yet and the quality is unknown. Always do you homework, buying crappy supplements is a waste of money.
If you are a beginner and if you are making good progress without protein powder shakes then do not use them. For example I did not use any supplements in my first year at all and I still made good progress. But if you are already more advanced and serious about building muscle then supplements will give you a big advantage.
